Getting free internet with a dish

Getting free internet with a dish

Back in 2015, my girlfriend and I rented an apartment in Auckland CBD that overlooks the Law School.

I thought it'd be interesting to see if we could get reliable WiFi from the university's network. I ordered a Ubiquiti PowerBeam to find out. The dish costs $195, while Spark broadband costs $100/month.

After precariously attaching the antenna to a tripod and configuring the client, we got a connection. A pretty good one too! Speeds were typically around 100 Mbps, comparable to a solid VDSL connection.

We connected the AP to a TP-Link router running OpenWRT to masquerade our home client devices behind NAT.
